On the back of opening his Royston Town account with a brace in Tuesday night’s 5-0 drubbing of Southern League Division One Central title rivals Farnborough, Matt Nolan wants to weigh in with as many goals as possible to aid the Crows’ quest for silverware.

The striker, who signed from league rivals Arlesey Town early last week, scored two goals – in his third appearance for Steve Castle’s men – in four first-half minutes to hand league leaders Royston a 3-0 half-time advantage against the Yellows.

Town cruised to the eventual win and Nolan, who began this season at Barton Rovers before moving to the Blues, is hoping for more of the same before the end of the campaign.

Nolan told the Crow: “[It was a]perfect time [to get my first two goals].

“I thought we played really well and we had a few great chances [in the first half] but we didn’t take them.

“To get the two goals before half-time was great though and [it] gave us breathing space going into the second half.”

He added: “My aim is to help the team win the league.

“[There are] 16 games to go though so we have to keep working hard and hopefully my goals can help us move closer to that objective.”

The 34-year-old forward, who counts League One Peterborough United and Hitchin Town among his former clubs, says the move to Garden Walk was not a difficult decision.

He continued: “The team are top of the league so it was hard to turn down and also I know quite a few of the lads here as well so it wasn’t a hard choice.

“Arlesey were great with me so I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them but Royston is a great move so I was happy to take it.”

Having started just one game this season – Arlesey’s Bedfordshire Senior Cup penalty-shootout defeat to Kempston Rovers last month – he was ecstatic to play a full 90 minutes in the high stakes affair.

Nolan said: “[The] gaffer asked me how I was and I felt alright so he decided to leave me on. It was good to get a full game under my belt again.”
