Royston Town boss Steve Castle was delighted with an ‘emphatic’ 4-0 victory over Kings Langley on Saturday after an 18-day break from action.

The Crows were back to winning way on Saturday at Garden Walk after a run of postponed games left them without a match for almost three weeks.

Their last fixtures - February defeats to Weymouth and Saturday’s opponents Kings Langley - saw Royston fail to score in back-to-back games for the first time this season, but they hit back in style - an Adam Marriott double added to by Rohdell Gordon and Daniel Braithwaite for a thumping 4-0 victory.

Speaking to CrowSport, boss Castle said: “We’ve had plenty of chances to reflect on our previous two performances and I think the lads were ready to burst into life.

“They were a little bit rusty, which is to be expected, but the attitude of every single one of them was first class and it was good to get ourselves back to winning ways.

“We put the two disappointments behind us and the way we did it was brilliant. Hopefully that will continue.”

Royston’s spirited start to the game paid off after 17 minutes when Kings Langley struggled to clear Lee Chappell’s corner, before the ball fell to Marriott three-yards from goal to tap in.

The first 45 finished 1-0 after a disallowed Marriott goal for offside on the stroke of half-time. The Crows then got a legal second goal nine minutes after the restart - Braithwaite netting from another close range finish.

Marriott put the tie to bed after 65 minutes with a long-range strike for 3-0, before Gordon capped a good performance by grabbing his fourth goal in five games after 88 minutes, winning the ball back and thumping one in before the final-whistle.

With their biggest rivals for the fourth play-off spot, Slough Town, winning 2-1 over Frome Town, the Crows are still ahead on games played and behind on both points and goal difference.

Castle said: “I’m not a defeatist but it’ll be very hard to get up with Slough’s goal difference, it’s an added thing against us.

“Our agenda is to take it (the play-off fight) into the last week of the season, when we play Slough twice.

“You can’t help but look at what they’re doing, even if you don’t want to know you get told about it. It filtered onto the bench on Saturday that Frome were 1-0 up, it just gets out.

“I’ve looked at their fixtures and they’ve still got a lot of away games and will have to play teams that are fighting for their lives or promotion, so you never know.”

On Saturday the Crows host Banbury United at Garden Walk, a side they lost to 3-0 in December and another team with an outside chance of a play-off spot.

Castle said: “They beat us fair and square at their place, it was a bad day for us and we didn’t perform very well. They’re a big, strong, formidable team and it will be a vital three points to contest.”
