ROYSTON Golf Club inflicted a huge defeat on Brampton Park in the first round of the Goddard Cup, a county scratch knockout competition, in which Royston lost in a sudden death play-off last year.

Despite missing several key players and having to concede one of the morning foursomes, due to Jonathan Osler, dislocating his knee, Royston went in 3 - 1 up at lunch.

Their superior play in the afternoon saw the pull away from their visitors winning the singles 712 to 12, for a massive overall victory.

The club will now host Ramsey in the next round.

Team: Robert Clark, Stuart Phillips, Mark Rogers, Olllie Bance, Ben Geldart, Paul Thomson, Adam Woods, Richard Howorth.

The ladies were not to be outdone as they have progressed through the first two rounds of the Mail on Sunday competition.

After an excellent victory over Letchworth away and a tough game against Bishop's Stortford, they are now through to the fourth round where they will play Brookmans Park.

The club hosted its Annual Open Family Foursomes on Sunday, which attracted players from around the region.

The countback rule was required to decide the winners and it was Ian and Sally Campbell-Gray who sneaked the title from Eddie and Tina Collins, with both pairs finishing on 36 points. In third place were Janice Abrahams and Gerald George.

The best front nine went to Keith Wood and Tom Smith with Tom Shaw and his son Thomas winning the back nine prize.

The men's fourball on Sunday was won by Mark Bonnett and Mick Jyner with an outstanding 46 points, two ahead of Peter Mitchell and John Fenton.

Three pairs tied for third on 42 points, Robin Christie and Steve De Fraine, Darren and John Ellis and Jack Yetton and Gary Fortune.

Played in ideal conditions over the PGA EuroPro Essex/Cambridgeshire course at Heydon Grange, Ray Charles (14) was on song when he secured his first ever trophy win by holding off the challenge of Mel Marks (5) and Malcolm Knobel-Forbes (12) in the Lakeside Trophy.

His 37 points off 34 handicap ensured he took the trophy by two points from Marks and Knobel-Forbes who tied on 35 points each; the former taking second place on count back.

For those wishing to watch the professionals in action, the PGA EuroPro Tour will be visiting Heydon Grange again during the first week in June.

The tour commences with pro-am competition on June 7 and teams wishing to enter can book a place by contacting Heydon Grange Golf and Country Club on 01763 838781.
