REED are completing their preparations for the forthcoming cricket season under the new captaincy of James Heslam, and with a current focus on their first team bowling line up.

With key paceman Michael Berks having moved away from the area over the winter, there is a big opportunity for a new opening bowler to make his mark with the Reed first team in 2007.

Additional doubts over the early season fitness of South African paceman Andy Young, who has undergone surgery on a troublesome knee, underline this opportunity.

While obviously hoping that some of the younger players at the club will be able to come through and fill the boots of Berks and Young, Reed would equally welcome the arrival of any new bowling talent.

Skipper Heslam said: "Whilethere is a lot of good bowling in the second and third teams there is really a big opening this year for anyone wanting to join us to play a decent level of local cricket this summer.

"Someone could really come and make a name for themselves here at Reed. We are a successful club playing high grade Herts League Cricket and are entered in several other competitions and Sunday Leagues.

"We have excellent facilities and a good club atmosphere. We have a vibrant first team with many former Colts who have made the grade in high level adult cricket, but some strengthening of our bowling department could make a significant difference to our chances this season.

"Anyone interested should certainly get in contact and look at joining up now for a few pre-season nets and practice sessions."
