Bassingbourn Knights 2
BASSINGBOURN started their season with three points with James Bairstow scoring the winner.
Bairstow was lively from the start and had a fierce drive pushed on to the post within minutes, after Evan Goldman and Ben Blowers went close.
But they were on the back foot when a Letchworth striker picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and finished with a cracking strike on the stroke of half-time.
As Bassingbourn pressed for an equaliser, Blowers crashed another shot on to the upright as Bairstow created space up front.
And it was this link up that led to the Knights winner, as Bairstow's long-throw found Blowers, who coolly placed the ball under the diving Letchworth keeper.
The goal fired up Bassingbourn, and with a few minutes remaining Callum Waller's shot fell for Bairstow to fire home.
