ROYSTON Rugby Club hosted a fun day, with the club's top coaches putting youngsters through their paces.

The annual event was set up to attract more young people to the sport and to encourage them to keep active over the summer months.

The event which saw more than 50 youngsters between five-16 descend on Therfield Heath, was conducted by a number of the club's coaches including senior club coach Kevin Green, and vets captain Colin Letch.

Green said: "The fun days are above all about having fun, and I think everybody involved certainly had that.

"I've been very impressed with the youngsters and they've shown a will to learn and play the game."

The aspiring rugby stars not only got to grips with the tackle bags, but were also shown the skills needed for passing, handling, running and hand-to-eye coordination.

Harrison Baldwin, six, said: "Today has been lots of fun. I love playing rugby and especially like getting lots of tries."

And nine-year-old Anna Worsey said: "I really like playing rugby and I think today has encouraged more girls to play the game.

"Girls can play rugby too, it's not just for boys - actually we are a lot better!"

With the club having youth teams from under-six through to under-17, the fun days prove to be a successful tool in generating youngsters to sign up.

Alex Ashraf, 13, said: "I would definitely like to play for Royston and will hopefully play in the new season.

"The fun day has been really good, and learning the different drills and skills has been great."

Club chairman David Gee said: "The day has been well attended and that's fantastic news.

"If only three or four of the kids join the club then it's a success.

"A lot of them don't get the chance to play rugby at school, so this was a great opportunity for them.
