Vets notched a deserved win - although they came away from Garden Walk disappointed not to have extended their superiority beyond Nick Humphries' strike.
The hosts started in a confident mood, with early efforts from Steve Holden, Carlo Silenti, and Peter Leete testing the Knebworth goalkeeper.
Leete looked sharp from the off, leading the Royston line to great effect, and going close with a number of rasping drives.
Paul Lewis also saw a good effort saved by the keeper, with Holden endeavouring to outdo his old Cambridge City teammate Leete, with another powerful strike as The Crows went into the interval in a commanding position.
Town then introduced Brian Cannon and Mike Jackson, and along with the energy of John Thorpe, they dominated the second half.
The long-awaited goal arrived midway through the half, when Jackson and Silenti combined to free Leete, and when the striker played in the overlapping Humphries, the midfielder made no mistake with a confident finish.
Because of his side's dominance, Royston's second-half keeper McArthur was a virtual spectator , and with the impressive performances of Colin Bowers, Holden, Silenti, and Leete, the rest of the season looks promising.
Royston Town Vets: Chaffey; King, Stubbs, Flack, Bowers; Silenti, Clark, Holden, Humphries; Lewis, Leete. (Subs): McArthur, Jackson, Thorpe, Cannon, Allen.
