ROYSTON were guaranteed one place in the fourth round of the County Triples, with two of their teams meeting in an entertaining third round clash.

Unfortunately for Len Payne, Mick O'Flanagan, and Peter Adams, clubmates Terry Hollands, Bob Porter, and Laurie Ramsay proved too strong and ran out 17-8 winners.

In the third round of the County Pairs, Adams saw better luck, and alongside Matt Coppen saw off Baldock's Todd and Turner with a convincing 27-16 victory.

A number of Royston bowlers were also in action in the County Singles Day, with Ramsay seeing the first success with a 21-15 win against Crosby of Baldock.

Coppen then eased home to an untroubled 21-9 win against another Baldock bowler, Terry Saunders, while Simon Lee sent fellow Royston man Hollands packing with a hard-fought 22-14 win.

Colin Wilson edged to a narrow 21-18 victory in the County Unbadged competition, beating Letchworth Conservatives' Malcolm Treadway.

In the L&D Triples, Will Martin led Eddie Collins and Peter Fisk to 14-11 victory over Norton BC, while Royston's Vets were in action against Letchworth Garden City Vets, who proved too strong in the mixed triples game, with Royston going down 105-66.

There was also defeat in the North Herts Inter League for Royston's team of two rink fours against Baldock. Andy Keating, Derek Goodwin, Don Sheriff and Adams did manage a respectable 19-19 draw against their opponents. However, Colin Pawson, Stan Whitehouse, Keith Dockree, and Stewart Brown crashed to a 36-7 defeat.

In the National Top Team Competition, Royston suffered more misery with a disappointing defeat to Townsend BC of St Albans.

Brian Pepper lost his two wood singles, edged out by John Goodman 15-8, with Coppen suffering a rare defeat, losing 21-17 to Andrew Briden.

The triples of Stan Whitehouse, Hollands, and O'Flanagan also lost by four shots as they slipped to a 19-15 defeat, after being 12-2 down after only eight ends.

The fours also suffered a loss with Sheriff, Dockree, Flack and Adams unable to seal the needed six shots with a 18-15 defeat.

However, Lee and Brown did register some hope with an impressive 23-13 win in the pairs.

MELDRETH Bowls Club registered their first win of the season, beating the previously unbeaten and top-of-the-table Cottenham.

On a very wet night, Malcolm Chapman lost the quarter-final of the Champion of Champions to Cyril Scotcher 21-15.

Ken Lee, Malcolm Chapman, and Kevin Stanford lost in the second round of the county triples15-14 to Barry Grimwood's triple from Isleham.

At the half-way stage in the derby against Bassingbourn, Meldreth were down on three rinks, with only Malcolm Chapman's rink winning.

David Lester's rink continued to play well and won 22-14 against a Meldreth trio skipped by Brunsdon, but Gunton came back from 9-3 down to win 21-11 against Infanti and Lee won the last five ends against Manley to finish 13-all after being 13-6 down.
