The grasstrack cycling season came to a close in style as Ashwell Cycle Club hosted the final round of the summer.

The day began with an impeccably observed period of silence in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as riders young and old stood shoulder to shoulder to remember, honour and reflect.

However, once racing began in both sunshine and torrential downpours, it was all action.

CCA riders Martin Lawless and Brendan Ronayne shared early work on front of the bunch to keep the visiting teams at bay.

A strong turn out from neighbouring clubs made for a day of intriguing racing among the adults as various riders attacked the home team.

Podium places were evenly shared across the day's events.

Youth racing, as ever, provided many of the day’s highlights.

The Go-Ride category, for the youngest riders of the day, was competitive throughout with CCA’s Ewan Ronayne and Josh McAdam locked in fierce battles.

Both topped the podium for their age groups.

In the girls' U10 class Molly Brazier kept her cool in some of the day's more challenging weather and she rode to victory, her sprint to overhaul her closest rivals in the keirin leaving judges with their first photo finish of the day.

Five-year-old Charlie Brazier, a crowd favourite throughout the summer, entertained with his efforts particularly as he stormed to victory in the day’s handicap.

In the U12 girls' fixed wheel races CCA twins Lottie and Sophie Anderton, having pushed each other to reach new highs throughout the season, finished with a well deserved one-two.

Lottie was the one who claimed the win, managing to pull away and hold off the chasing bunch as the sisters mixed it with older and more experienced riders in a youth version of the points race.

Ashwell also enjoyed plenty of success in the U10 and U12 boys' categories.

Oscar Darton and Coireall Marlow set top times in the U12 flying lap competition while U10 Toby Scott pushed the older pair throughout.

Henry Chaloner, making his fixed wheel debut, rode solidly throughout and enjoyed tight finishes against the VC Londres riders in all of the day's events.

Attention now turns to cyclo-cross with CC Ashwell putting on Saturday youth sessions between 1.30pm and 3pm from October 1.
