ON holiday in New Zealand, I read the story (The Crow, April 20) that North Herts District Council's Royston area committee had approved an application for a warehouse to the west of the industrial area with dismay and a profound sense of shock.

We can be grateful that sanity prevailed when the appeals board rejected the application.

I do wonder if our district councillors took time to read the documentation which supported this particular application. If they had, they would have seen that the proposal would have brought little additional employment or economic benefit to Royston, but would have brought considerable additional heavy vehicles to York Way, 24-hours-a-day, disrupting the life of residents.

It would also have been an enormous blot on the landscape, destroying the views from Therfield Heath.

That Councillor Davidson suggested that it is inevitable the land will be developed is prejudging the forthcoming Local Development Plan.

I for one, and I'm sure many others, will vigorously oppose any industrial or housing development to the west of the existing Royston development limits, and I hope that he and other councillors will support such a restriction.

I'm sure there will be more to say on this and other matters when I return, let us all be grateful this proposal has been stopped.
