AS chairman of the Royston and District Chamber of Commerce, I have observed one or two critical, and in some cases anonymous comments, regarding the successful result of the referendum to create a Business Improvement District.

The steering group for Royston First carried out a substantial programme of consultation, coupled with a high profile campaign to extol the benefits of creating a BID for Royston.

In the view of the Chamber, Royston First is indeed a catalyst for change and should be celebrated as a symbol of optimism for Royston and the surrounding district, despite the chill winds of recession now blowing through the local economy.

On a national level, controversies rage about fiscal stimuli but what is needed locally is strident localism with our own local fiscal stimulus.

The Royston First team represents hope for the future and in the view of the Chamber should be supported by all in difficult times.
