Polling station officer needs guidance

IN response to Nanya Lilley's letter in last week's Crow, I would like to point out that it was not the fault of Royston Town Council that the wrong door was opened for the polling station in Market Hill.
I visited the polling station on election day and was absolutely incensed that the fire exit was being used as the main door into the polling station.
I found the presiding officer was unaware of the new front door.
When I asked him about not using the ramp for disabled people and the new entrance he seemed a confused, stating that the instructions given to him by North Herts District Council did say Market Hill entrance as opposed to Fish Hill.
I checked with the town clerk as to who gives the instructions for the day and was informed that it was the district council - and not the town council.
She, like me, was quite incensed that after getting Royston's Market Hill Rooms refurbished and ready for the local elections it was no better for the electorate than in previous elections.
As chairman of the town council's premises sub-committee, I instructed the town clerk to contact the relevant officer at the district council to express the town council's disappointment in organisation.
We can only hope that at any future election the presiding officer has better guidance from the district council.
