I AM writing on behalf of Royston town and district councillors who would like to thank all those Royston schools who have worked with us on the exciting new Town Council School visit initiative this year.

We have really enjoyed our visits with the school councils and have been able to have an extremely interesting and informative dialogue with the children. Local councillors have been able to explain the work they do in local government and lively discussions have taken place about what it means to be a good citizen.

It has also been useful to learn what the children like and don't like about living in Royston - one of their main bug-bears seems to have been about the amount of litter and mess they see around the town.

However, it has also been most heartening to hear from them that many of them are happy living here and think that, generally, Royston is a nice place to grow up in.

We do hope that the schools we have visited have also found them useful and enjoyable and that this will be the beginning of a much closer working relationship between schools and the town council and bring about a greater understanding of the role of local government in these children's lives.

Who knows, some of the children we have visited might one day become the local councillors of the future as a result.
