IT'S has taken almost a year, but now Royston Town Council has control of the twice-a-week market.

The arrival of a market manager this week will obviously help.

And there is determination by the town council to make the market a success over future years.

It may not be a simple task as the operation has had the appearance of being run down in recent times.

But the ideas about its future and the awareness of needing to attract new traders has to be applauded.

Indeed, the move needs our support as a community, too.

Perhaps it will be difficult to recreate the heydays of the market, but, at least, the town council has taken on an operation in which it sees a successful outcome.

After all, a market town needs a market.

We hope the change of management and the plans for the future of the market, which are to be discussed shortly, will be part of a long-term rescue plan.
