WINTER sports are assured throughout the season in the Italian resort of Cesana. The small, charming resort has pistes of more than 2,500 metres which offer opportunities for skiing, snow-boarding and bobsledding. Cesana is one of the resorts that makes up the extensive Milky Way ski area, situated high in the Susa Valley on the south western Alps, on the Italian side of the Italian-French border. The resort is made up of six picturesque Alpine villages that cater for all levels of skiing ability, but is said to be particularly good for intermediates. Currently, Cesana is hosting the Bobsleigh World Cup competition in the run up to the Winter Olympics. The bobsleigh run is said to stretch the skills and bravery of those taking part. For the visitor, Cesana has a range of restaurants serving traditional pizza and pasta to impressive nouvelle cuisine. WHERE TO STAY Lodging is provided by a selection of hotels and pensions in nearby Claviere and Cesana. TIP A visit to the impressive ruins of Chaberton Fortress makes a day out when visitors want to rest from the slopes. The ruins are located at more than 3,000 metres, making it the highest fortress in Europe. TRAVEL Turin airport is an hour's drive from Cesana.
