A great time was had by all at this is year’s Light Party in Royston – which celebrated its 10th year.

The event, at the Coombes Community Centre in Burns Road, provides an alternative to Halloween for children in the district.

Paul Brown of Churches Together – which organised the party – said: “We had 130 children come to the event many of them with their parents too, and everyone had a great time.

“The mayor, councillor Vera Swallow, came along and she was enjoying herself.

“The children were doing craft activities and games, all to do with light, and coming up with many creative ideas.

“We want to thank everyone who helped out, including Morrisons, Tesco and the The Brian Leslie Racher Charitable Trust.

Helen Tobiss, who is from Chruches Together and has helped organise the event every year for the past decade, said: “We ran it originally as a one-off event but it has proved so popular we’ve done one every year.

“It’s so rewarding seeing children coming together and having such fun. We see this as an opportunity to celebrate and bring light back into what for many has become quite a dark festival of monsters and ghosts.”
