Youngsters in Royston have got stuck in with crafty history activities at Royston’s district museum.
As part of the museum’s new ‘historical crafterdays’, children got crafty and discovered what the people of Royston did during the First World War to raise money for the war effort.
Museum assistant Amy Judd said: “Learners discovered that in 1917, kids collected eggs and flowers and made charity flags to show their support.
“Jump to 2017 and our young visitors made paper eggs and added the name of a real Royston soldier.
“They then decorated a remembrance branch with them. There were some really colourful flags!
“The young visitors and their families learned about the hospital in Royston that looked after wounded soldiers. It was great to show the names of the soldiers to the children – they got to learn about the different ranks and military jobs they had, too.”
There will be a session one Saturday each month – where families can try out lots of crafts, have a go at a trail around the museum, and get ideas for more crafts or games to try at home.
The next event is on Saturday, October 14, and will follow the theme of local folklore.
