Young actors from the Royston area were celebrated at an awards ceremony hosted by an amateur dramatics group at the weekend.

CADS handed out two awards, the Fred Sillence Award – named in honour of a former member and editor of the Royston Crow – and the Lizzie Houghton Award, which is given for outstanding contribution to youth drama.

This year’s Lizzie Houghton Award was presented to Amy Jordan for her characterisation of Madame Thénardier in Meridian School’s production of Les Miserables in November, which was praised as “excellent, with superb comic timing.”

The Fred Sillence Award was presented to Joe Symonds of school of dance and performing arts centre GStars, who earned a distinction in his street dance exam.

CADS chairman Ian Cowley said: “Joe uses his vivid imagination to become a character, delivering performances which demonstrate a real connection to the piece.”
