To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War on Sunday, villagers in Sandon have commissioned a commemorative stone in memory of the brave young men who went to fight, including the 12 from the village who lost their lives.
The stone which has been installed near the lychgate of All Saints’ Church has been made in Cumbrian slate by the renowned stone masons Cardozo Kindersley Workshop and carries the inscription ‘Sandon Remembers All Those Who Served in the Great War 1914-1918’, as well as a painted poppy.
Jean Handley, who is a Sandon resident as well as a military historian and author, said: “We are so grateful to everyone for their incredibly generous donations that has enabled us to commission this beautiful and elegant stone. It is such a fitting tribute to all who served.”
The stone will be blessed by Rev Fiona Wheatley at a special dedication service held at 10.15am on Sunday before the All Saints’ Remembrance Day service.
Jean Handley will be presenting her new book “Remembering Our Sandon Soldiers” to the church at the Remembrance service.
