World record bid for Fowlmere charity

A WORLD record breaking bid to gather as many people with same name in one place has been organised by a Folwmere charity set up in memory of a nine-year old boy.
Tom’s Trust was founded by the parents of Tom Whiteley who died after a brief brain tumour battle and they need over 1,100 people called Tom or Thomas to get involved to enter the record books.
Poignantly the attempt will take place at Old Trafford as Tom was an avid Manchester United fan, with the club’s charitable wing giving him the chance to meet players weeks before he died.
Deborah Whiteley said: “There is a group of people walking from Manchester to Cambridge and they are starting at Old Trafford and to give the event some publicity we want to get as many Toms together as we can.
“Tom loved Manchester United, it was his favourite team and he met all the players weeks before he died and we thought it was the most appropriate place to start the walk.
“We are really looking forward to it and hoping we can break the world record.”
The current record was set in Dubai when 1096 Mohammeds got together in 2005. Anyone called Tom or Thomas can take part in the bid on July 8.
Tom’s Trust will not raise money from the attempt but have moved rapidly towards their goal of collecting £220,000 for a full time psychologist to be help young people suffering from brain tumours and their families at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
Deborah found the assistance invaluable during Tom’s illness but there was no full-time provision at the hospital and the charity has raised £90,000 to fund a psychologist since it formed nine months ago.
She said: “I can’t believe how much we have raised, it is absolutely fantastic.
“Everyone has got behind it and the word has spread but we need to keep going and push it further.”
