A WOMAN died and a man was seriously injured when their car hit a tree on the eastbound carriageway of the A505 near Ashwell on Saturday morning.

Police say the couple were travelling in a silver Suzuki Alto, driven by the man from Letchworth GC, when it was in collision with a white Renault Mastervan driven by a man from Royston.

Following the collision at the junction with Station Road, the Suzuki spun across the road and hit a tree.

The woman died at the scene. The man was transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. The van driver was unhurt.

The A505 was closed for nearly four hours while police carried out an investigation into the tragedy.
