Successful event also features huge classic car show

THE winning logo for the Royston 2012: Year of Celebrations committee was announced at the successful 2011 Royston May Fayre on Monday.

A design by Meridian School pupil Hannah Ward, 14, was selected from more than 700 entries from the area’s school children, and will be used on all material produced by the Royston 2012 Co-ordinating Committee.

David Higgins of Black Pig Design, who sat on the judging panel, said: “Hannah’s logo showed clarity of understanding for the objectives of the project.

“It fulfils the role of being instantly recognised in all its applications during 2012 events.”

Hannah received a framed certificate and badges of Olympic Games mascots Wenlock and Mandeville and a cheque for 200 to be used by her school for the purchase of sports equipment.

The winner of the seven to 11 years age group was Lewis Bray, who attends Roysia Middle School, and the winner of the under seven group was Amber Sarter, a pupil at Roman Way First School.

Each school received a cheque for 50 to purchase sports equipment.

The prizes were presented by Royston-based Heasell Electromechanical Services, whose managing director Gary Abrams presented the prizes at the May Fayre.

The Royston 2012 Committee is to organise local events in celebration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the 850th anniversary of the founding of the Priory, which established Royston as a town. Meanwhile, a record number of entries went on display at the Rotary Club of Royston’s Classic Car Show during the fayre.

More than 100 vehicles, ranging from 110 years old to modern cars were on display along with 57 motor cycles.

The mayor’s prize, presented by town mayor Cllr Martin Beaver, went to Phillip Butcher for his 1938 MG TA Midget.

Rotary president Jonathan Berks presented the prize for the best car in the show to Edward Rayment for his 1933 Austin 7 and the best motor cycle in the show went to Dave Woods for his 1959 BSA.

Cllr Beaver said: “I had never seen so many wonderful vehicles in one location. The work by the Rotary Club was fantastic and I’m pleased to have been involved in such an event.”

Show organiser Ray Munden said: “The show goes from strength to strength. We seem to be attracting more vehicles each year.”

Cllr Beaver was also complimentary of Royston Town Council, who organise the May Fayre each year.

“My thanks must go to the May Fayre committee and all the people that gave up their time to marshall the event – mainly the town council officials and councillors – for their tireless work,” he said.

“It was very well attended and the superb weather made sure the park was full all day.”
