Art teacher of Bassingbourn Village College Nicky Price set her Year 7 students the challenge of making Christmas decorations from natural or reclaimed materials.

Nicky Price said: “We were asked to help Royston town centre with its Christmas decorations and the students were all really excited to be involved. So much work has gone into some of the decorations with students using a wide range of materials … bottle tops, lightbulbs, sticks and tin cans to name a few.”

The project came about as a spin-off from an original collaboration that had Year 8 students making lanterns out of willow and tissue paper for use in conjunction with Rudolph’s Trail.

For this second project, the college was invited to help dress the window of the vacant 53 High Street shop and more than 100 handmade decorations were created from recycled materials including transformed pine cones, cotton snowmen, coke cans and wool.

Initiative sponsors Royston First were said to be so impressed with the quality and effort on display that they decided to award prizes of chocolate Santas to the 10 most original and seasonal designs.

The crafters of the winning designs were Archie Triplow, Rafferty Hall, Lucy Whiteley, Frankie Venn, Ruby Ames, Hannah King, Julienne Hobbis, Avuyile Mdzinwa, Melissa Phillips and Caitlyn Smith.

Representing Royston First, town manager Geraint Burnell said: “It was clear the students had put tremendous effort into their designs during half term and we really enjoyed admiring every single one of them. Thank you and congratulations to all who took part in the project and particularly to those who won chocolate!”
