WITH the fourth annual Pink Run/Walk looming, The Crow will be following the progress of seven participants as they train for the three- mile course.

The run/walk will be held on June 3 on Therfield Heath in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Last year about 500 women took part, and more than £20,000 was raised, but this year's event is open to men as well as women.

Michaela Huffer, of the organising committee said: "The pink ribbon is not a race! It is a run or walk to raise funds for Cancer Research, and everyone can join in the fun."

Maurice Hill of the Royston Runners said only 40 people took part in the event four years ago.

So with its popularity increasing, The Crow spoke to seven people who are taking part this year, and will be following their progress as they train for the event with Mr Hill.

Christine Heald, wife of MP Oliver Heald, said: "The event is a wonderful local fundraising opportunity for an excellent national cause.

"I very much admire Michaela and her committee for the effort they put in last year to make it a huge success. I couldn't do it last year because I broke my ankle, so I was determined to take part this year even if it means that I'm just going to walk the course."

Other participants are taking part because the charity is close to their heart.

Town mayor Lynne Berry said: "I have had several friends die of cancer, so it's always been something that I have felt was necessary to do, and if I'm fit enough to do it I will continue to do it."

Pat Thompson of the Pig and Abott public house will be walking the course with her 22-month-old puppy.

She said: "As a pub we like to raise money for good causes. One of my customers has got cancer and I have had friends who have suffered with the disease."

Anna Ragg of Angels and Rascals, High Street, Royston is taking part for the first time.

She said: "The event is about cancer and I have had the disease in my family and that's pushing me more to raise money for the charity."

Nicky Maule and Danielle Wightman-Stone, who are members of the Royston Runners, are taking part to raise money for a good cause - and to keep fit.

Danielle said: "I am taking part in the Pink Run to kick- start my new fitness plan. I have always wanted to get into running and join a running club but doing it for charity has spurred me on."

Tracey Nicholls of WKH, sponsors of the event, is also taking part.

She said: "My company is sponsoring the event so it's good to get stuck in and make it worthwhile.

"On a more personal level, my father died of cancer last year, and for me I'm taking part to get fit. It's another excuse to get walking and lose some weight."

Michaela added: "Lots of families have been affected by cancer, and for us all this is a chance to support this incredibly worthwhile charity.

"Many people enter as a way of remembering a friend or family member, and others to show their support for people currently fighting the disease.

"The atmosphere last year was incredible, so come along and be part of this very special community event."

Beginners training sessions for the run/walk take place every Tuesday at 6.30 pm on Royston Heath.

Places for the run/walk are limited to 750 people.
