A mum-of-two from Meldreth has said she is overwhelmed by the support of her friends who have began fundraising so she can have ‘normal’ days out with her family following an incurable cancer diagnosis.
Lysa Kemp, 32, was told she had neuroendocrine tumors in June after she became disorientated walking home from work as a teaching assistant at Meldreth Primary School and went to the doctors for a blood test.
“I didn’t feel unwell, I thought maybe it was diabetes, but when they said it was cancer I thought they’d remove it.
“But because of how much of it there was they said they couldn’t do surgery and treatment was the best option.”
Lysa lives with husband – and now carer – Stuart, Carys, 11, and 10-year-old Kai.
She said that her family are keeping her going and her friends, fellow mums from the school, have been amazing.
Lysa’s treatment is due to start at the end of October at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and said her consultant Helen Simpson and nurse Debbie Pitfield have been incredibly supportive.
Lysa’s friends Patricia Olbrych, Charlotte Duggan, Agnieszka Olszanicka, Angela Cham, Sam Bowen and Paulina Toporska, led by Patricia Bielecka of Harmony Day Spa in Royston, have began fundraising so she can use the money to have normal days to look forward to create special memories for her children, and are encouraging those who want to treat themselves to come along and support the cause.
They are throwing a fundraiser at the salon in Baldock Street on Tuesday, November 8, which includes mini-makeovers, cakes from Ramona Bridgman and more. And half of of the day’s takings will be added to the total fund.
“When I heard the news I was so shocked,” Patricia said.
“At only 32 and with two children she has so much life ahead of her.”
“It is fantastic that they are doing this.” said Lysa.
“I don’t feel worthy, it is overwhelming.”
“I have told my children mummy is sick, and that I’m going to be poorly for a while because don’t know what the future holds, we just want to make the most of it.”
