Efforts to make Royston a go-to destination for sightseers around the country and beyond have been boosted by the formation of a tourist information centre in the town’s library.

The Royston Information Centre was created by Royston First, and is a partnership between Royston First and Hertfordshire Libraries dedicated to providing high-quality visitor information as well as promoting tourism to the town.

The centre has recently been approved by VisitHerts and VisitEngland and is allowed to use VisitEngland’s official Tourist Information signs and the well-known ‘i’ sign.

James Robinson is the centre’s visitor information officer.

“The current trend is for tourist information centres to close rather than open,” he said.

“But we all feel that Royston has a lot to offer the visitor and so quite a lot of money to promote Royston as a tourist destination.”

Visitors to the centre can discover what there is to see and do in the town and test their history knowledge using the touch-screen interactive quiz – there’s even a full size copy of one of the walls from Royston Cave.

As well as a well-stocked series of brochures, which include maps and guides to the town, there’s leaflets on the museum, cave and a brand new town trail.

The new trail takes you on a two and a half mile trip around Royston and explains what you can see at each of the 31 points of interest. These are available now at the centre in Market Hill.

Opening hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 5.30pm, Thursdays 10am to 1pm and Saturdays 9am to 4pm. For more info contact 01763 878242.
