TOWN councillors have critised plans to expand a waste site in Royston. The proposed development at Beverly Close came under attack at a meeting of Royston Town Council's finance and general purpose committee on Monday evening. Members described plans for the site as being too "vague". The plans do not specify the type of waste that would be dumped on the site, if proposals are given the go-ahead. Royston's county councillor Doug Drake, who attended the meeting, said: "What we don't know is what Herts County Council intends for this site. "I don't think it's fair to ask us to comment about something when we don't know what's happening there." The proposal states that the site would be used for "clean waste". Cllr Les Baker said: "We don't know what's going to be there. Is it medical waste? Is it hazardous waste? What does 'clean waste' mean?" Despite the fact development of the site has not been approved, work is believed to have already begun. Cllr Rod Kennedy said: "There were one hell of a lot of people there this afternoon putting down tarmac. We never received a detailed planning application for the site. I think it's important that we know what's going." The committee agreed to ask the county council for more detail on the proposals. The site was one of 63 across the Herts which are under consideration for waste disposal. Consultants working on the proposals are being paid £48,000.
