IT has been confirmed that the crow that was broken off the war memorial in Melbourn Street, Royston, will be fixed in time for remembrance Sunday, much to the relief of the town’s councillors.

The grade two listed monument was damaged on the night of Saturday 4 September, and the crow was found the following morning by a passer-by.

It has now been sent off to a metal maintenance company for repair, and will be back in time for the event on November 11.

Royston Mayor Cllr Martin Beaver said: “I’m very pleased about this and so will be the people of Royston.

“I am overjoyed that the crow is going to be ready for remembrance Sunday as it forms the focal point of the day.”

The downside to the repair, is that it will cost the town council 669. A total of 250 of this is covered by insurance, with the remainder coming from the authority’s maintenance fund.

Cllr Beaver said: “It is lucky we are insured, but the rest is going to cost the tax payer. We can’t have any more damage done as the fund is not a bottomless pit.”

There have been no reports to police on the damage of the memorial.
