THREE of the volunteers behind stitching the 27m long Royston Tapestry were this week honoured.

The work which is nearing completion chronicles the town’s history and will be between 80-90ft when finished.

Freda Wright, Jean Ralls, and Kitty Verling have spent time stitching on the continuous length of crewel wool every week since 1993.

They all received Royston’s Civic Award at the annual town meeting last week.

The tapestry will feature 15 designs ranging from an imagined pre-history scene to The Black Death.

Mayor of Royston Cllr Robert Inwood said: “It was absolutely fantastic, it was one of the best things I have done since being mayor.

“It’s a great honour to be giving out the civic award as it’s important to recognise our voluntary sector.”

Three others received the nod including Florence Smith in recognition of over 17 years’ voluntary service as treasurer of Royston Townswomen’s Guild.

Kevin Clark was honoured for his 25 years voluntary service to Royston Chess Club by establishing the club and acting as secretary.

Sue Walter also took home an award for her 22 years of voluntary service for the Royston area of the Hertfordshire Hearing Advisory Service.
