A call for further action has been made over a dangerous crossroads which has become an accident blackspot.

The junction of Fenny Lane, Whitecroft Road and Kneesworth Road at the centre of Meldreth has been the scene of several accidents involving vehicles in recent weeks.

Meldreth Parish Council recently met the costs of reducing the speed limit to 30mph, but this does not seem to have solved the problem.

Cllr Susan van de Ven, Meldreth’s county councilllor, has written to Cambridgeshire County Council’s highways department.

She said: “There’s a long history of accidents in this area, and there’s been a spate recently. We have had three since the turn of the year, one of which saw a car end up in a ditch.

“A lot of children travel to school through this crossroads, many on foot. We have counted about 50 who live in West Way, Burtons, Five Acres and The Boulevard, and their safety is obviously a concern.

“I’ve been in contact with the county council because we need support to get something else done. The parish council has met the costs of having the speed limit reduced but it’s going to take a combination of measures.”

Philippa Hart, who lives in Fenny Lane just near the crossroads, said: “One day I fear there will be a fatality at this set of crossroads. The new 30mph speed limit entering Meldreth is a step in the right direction, but needs to be more prominently displayed and better still, obeyed.”

Cllr Graham Borgonon from Meldreth Parish Council said: “Cambridgeshire County Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council and the parish council are very much aware of the problem with the junction at Fenny Lane. One of the most recent accidents happened after we put the new 30mph speed restriction in, which suggests that bad driving could be a component factor.

“We have advised the county council and highways on the matter but any changes will have to be low cost changes. The matter will be discussed by the parish council on April 3.”
