Book worms at a village college have started a three-week readathon in aid of three charities.
The students from Melbourn Village College will be reading as many books as possible over the next three weeks to raise cash for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity; Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, for seriously ill and disabled children; and Readwell, which provides new books and storytellers for children in hospital.
Melbourn principal Simon Holmes said: “We encourage a love of reading in our students as there is strong evidence to link reading for pleasure and literacy to academic success and happiness. Readathon enables us to have a focus on reading whilst also supporting great causes.”
n The college was this week named in the top five per cent of schools nationally for progress in English. A report from Raiseonline showed more than 90% of Melbourn students made the expected progress, compared to the national average of 69%.
