MOTORISTS had an incredible escape as they swerved to avoid a car travelling the wrong way down the A505 dual carriageway.

The vehicle was first spotted at about 5pm on Saturday travelling towards Royston on the Baldock-bound carriageway, near the Ashwell turnings.

It narrowly missed several cars travelling in the opposite direction.

One driver, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was driving home to Baldock when I went to overtake a car that was in the inside lane.

"The rain was lashing down on to my windscreen and as I pulled out into the right-hand lane I saw a pair of headlights ahead coming towards me, so I made a sudden lunge to the left to get out of the way.

"I was driving at about 65mph and my car skidded across the lane and narrowly missed going off the road and into the field next to it.

"I thought the other car was going to hit me and I thought I was going to die.

"As I just steadied my vehicle, I noticed the car go past me the wrong way on the dual carriageway, but because of the fright and my heart beating so fast, I was unable to make out the type of car or driver.

"It all happened so fast and I'm just thankful that this idiot didn't hit any other vehicles behind me."

The 29-year-old added: "I guess he or she had pulled out from a side roa, but there are more than enough signs up telling people there is no right turn, and their stupidity could have put their and other drivers' lives at risk.

"Let's just hope they don't get back into their car again any time soon."

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said they had received three reports about the vehicle, but that officers dispatched to the scene could not locate it.

She added that to the force's knowledge no accidents had been caused by the driver's behaviour.
