VANDALS have been targeting allotments in Royston.

Windows have been smashed at sheds and greenhouses, while litter and dog fouling have also been causing problems for gardeners at the plots near Green Street.

Royston mayor Cllr Bob Smith has raised the matter with the police.

He said: “Since the underpass has opened between Burns Road and Green Street people have been going back and fourth across the allotments.

“A large hedge which used to be there was removed during the building, and though a new one has been planted it hasn’t grown yet and the allotments have been left rather exposed.

“Windows have been smashed, and there are problems with litter and dog mess. I raised the matter with the police in April, but it’s still going on and we’ve had three incidents this week.

“A large piece of wrought iron was thrown at a greenhouse, and a garden wall at a property in Green Street was knocked down. The homeowner picked up the bricks and stacked them up outside his house, but people have been taking them and throwing them around.

“We need to do something about this before it gets out of hand.”

Tony Churchman, from the Royston Allotments and Gardens Association (RAGA), confirmed some plot holders had been having issues.

He said: “There’s been some vandalism down there, I think it’s just kids who are bored. We’ve left the matter in the hands of the police.”

Officers from the Royston neighbourhood team held a meeting at the allotments on Friday, and have handed out posters warning people that the area is being watched.

They are also looking to recalibrate CCTV cameras at the underpass so that they cover the allotments.

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said: “We have stepped up patrols in that area and have put up a lot of notices. We are working very closely with the chairman and are closely monitoring the situation.

“If anyone sees anyone acting suspiciously in the area please contact Herts Police on 101.”

• RAGA is holding its annual open day at the allotments in Green Street on Sunday, May 26. It will run from 11am-3pm and all are welcome to attend.
