A COMMUNITY bus service may be axed unless it can attract more users.

The service was set up a couple of months ago to take elderly people from Bassingbourn into Royston and back.

However, so far only a few people have been taking advantage of the bus.

Pat Piggott, from Bassingbourn Community Centre, said: "We were asked by the over-60s club to put on a bus, but we've had a disappointing response.

"It isn't cost effective at the moment so unless more people start using it we won't be able to run it in future.

"Initially the service was set up for elderly people, but we would encourage other residents of Bassingbourn, such as young mothers, to use it as well.

"It only costs £2 to get into Royston and do your shopping, which isn't a high price."

The scheme has the backing of Bassingbourn Village College and the community centre.

Doris Sadler, who heads up the over-60s club, said: "It's ideal for elderly people like me, who can't get to and from the bus stop very well. It drops you right outside Somerfield as well so it's very handy.

"We have five regulars at the moment but we need about 12 to make it viable."

The bus runs from Bassingbourn to Royston every other Wednesday of the month.

Any residents of the village who are interested in booking a place should call Mrs Sadler on 01763 243512.
