Fire crews battling a blaze today (Wednesday) which has already consumed 1,000 tonnes of timber are expected to remain at the scene “for some time”.

The fire started at 12.05pm at Stonebury Farm in Hare Street, near Buntingford, with reports that a large pile of timber had caught alight.

Six fire engines initially attended the scene, but at least three have since left the scene with one crew now being sent to relieve day crews.

The fire service, tweeting at 5.55pm via its @HertsFRSControl account on Twitter, said: “One fire engine will shortly be making its way to the incident at Hare Street to relieve day crews.

“Although the incident has now been scaled down we expect at least one fire engine to remain on scene for some time.”
