A fire that consumed more than 1,000 tonnes of timber is now under control, according to the fire service.

Herts Fire and Rescue has been battling the fire since 12.05pm yesterday (Wednesday) at Stonebury Farm in Hare Street, near Buntingford.

Firefighters were called after a large timber stack caught alight but were unable to stop the fire consuming the entire 1,000 tonnes.

At its peak six engines attended the scene and three remained throughout the night to ensure the fire did not spread to neighbouring woodpiles.

The scene was declared safe at 7.30am today however one crew has remained on site to monitor the situation.

The incident has been deemed an accident and an inspection of the site is due to take place at 11am today (Thursday).
