TWO men have been arrested after the lorry they were travelling in was found to contain stolen cables.

The men, a 21-year-old and a 51-year-old both from Royston, were arrested on suspicion of metal theft after being stopped on the A10 near Buntingford. The pair were bailed to return to Stevenage Police Station on February 17 pending further enquiries.

Hertfordshire Police launched Operation Devon 18 months ago in a bid to cut down on metal theft.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Marren said: “We are continuing to crack down on those involved in metal theft and send out the message that if you are involved you will be caught.

“Operation Devon has made great strides in driving down this type of crime and through our work with scrap metal dealers it is now very difficult to make money from stealing metal.”
