MEMBERS of Royston’s twinning association cemented the town’s links with Spain with a special ceremony in Villanueva de la Cañada.
A party flew out last week to sign the formal twinning agreement as well as touring the sites that the region, located just north of Madrid, had to offer.
The town’s mayor Cllr Robert Inwood was among those who flew out for the ceremony.
“We have a proud tradition of twinning for nearly 40 years in Royston and I am sure that our link with Villanueva de la Cañada will blossom and flourish in the future,” he said.
He was joined by his wife and others, including Adrian Jones, the chairman of Royston and District Twinning Association, and Jane Dottridge, who was responsible for the Spanish link.
As well as signing the document, the group toured the region, taking in the sights of Madrid and also visited the nearby European Space Agency.
The group arrived back last Friday and are full of hope for the future.
Mr Jones said: “We were very pleased with the visit, and look forward to seeing our new Spanish friends in Royston at the end of September, with the welcome taking place during the Royston Arts Festival.
“There will also be a team entering the Mayor’s Golf Day.”
