Town's former mayor dies at 46

TIM Doyle, one of the youngest mayor's of Royston, has died at the age of 46. He has had medical problems for the past several years and died in Addenbrooke's hospital on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated. He was the son of the late Leo Doyle, himself, an ex-Mayor of Royston, and Joan Doyle. His sister, Julie Walker, described him as a "loving man", and his nephew, James, said he was "a very kind uncle". Cllr Bill Prime, the current Mayor of Royston, said: "It's very sad that he has passed away. "He was only in his 40s, which is no age at all." He said he would be remembered when he was mayor as someone who "took the job seriously". Tim Doyle became a councillor in 1990 when he was elected to both Royston Town Council and North Herts District Council. Two years later he became Mayor of Royston, becoming one of the youngest councillors to hold the position. His political awareness came from Leo Doyle, who had served as a town councillor and an elected member of North Herts District Council and eventually became Royston's county councillor on Herts County Council. Leo Doyle resigned from the town council in 1990 along with several other members, who at the time were seen as representing the Conservative "old guard". Tim Doyle was among a new generation of town councillors. He was a staunch member of the Conservative party, but there were occasions when he took issue with his colleagues over matters concerning Royston. In his dealings with people he was politeness personified: someone who always gave the impression of a gentlemen in spite of his youth and a person who showed concern and cared about the community. He was educated at Greneway School and The Meridian School in Royston and on leaving worked in the offices of Johnson Matthey in Royston. His funeral will be taking place at the Royston Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10am.
