FIVE people were recognised last night (Thursday) for their role in the community.

They each received a Community Award from the Mayor of Royston, Cllr Peter Lill, during the town annual meeting in Royston Town Hall.

Three of the awards were given to people who had played a role in the running of the Royston and District Museum during the past years.

They went to Peter Ketteringham, a trustee of the museum, Shirley Keith Williams and Christine Whitbourn, both of whom have been volunteers at the museum for many years.

Other awards went to Colin Mingay, who retired recently as Royston's community police officer and to Christine Baker for her 36 years of service as a teacher at St Mary's RC School in Royston.

Cllr Lill also gave out grants from the town council's Community Chest to voluntary groups.

They went to the Rotary Club of Royston for Youth Makes Music; the Royston & District Town Twinning Association; the Westgate School of Dancing; the Royston Town Band; the Royston Greenfingers Club; the Royston Arts Society; the Open House Project; the St John Parenting Team; the Royston Junior Netball Club and James and Clive Dilley for the archaeological day at Royston Museum.
