A DETAILED survey will establish how suitable Royston Town Hall is to host a community cinema.
The town council is employing a local building firm to carry out the survey, after a questionnaire of Royston residents revealed that they are overwhelmingly in favour of a cinema being installed on the site.
Cllr Bob Smith, leader of the town council, explained: "We've had some general surveys done already, but the quotes they came up with were a bit expensive.
"This one will be more tailored to our requirements, and look at things such as installing a lift for disabled access, and the structural state of the roof."
The community cinema project was announced earlier this year by the Royston First Business Improvement District Company. They are aiming to have up and running by 2012 once a suitable site has been identified.
If the cinema were built in the town hall, the town council would put up the cash to ready the building for the installation, while Royston First would pay for the equipment and running of the facility.
A questionnaire distributed by the town council revealed that 346 of the 356 respondents are in favour of the picture house being located at the town hall.
Cllr Smith added: "The town council is still very much behind this project. The town hall is in desperate need of some work so to get the cinema in would kill two birds with one stone.
