TESCO supermarket in Royston has launched its annual Christmas card recycling scheme.

The scheme, in association with the Woodland Trust, is in its fifth year and aims to recycle 60 million Christmas cards nationwide.

Jenny Sacre, Tesco environmental communications manager, said: "Everyone can make a difference in this scheme and after the Twelfth Night we would urge all of our customers to load their empty Tesco carrier bags with their Christmas cards and bring them to Tesco to recycle."

The 2005 scheme exceeded its 50 million target, totalling 58 million. Ioan Reed-Aspley, of the Woodland Trust, hopes they can beat their target again.

He said: "Christmas is a time when a huge amount of consumer waste is generated. By simply recycling Christmas cards we are doing our bit to address the problem and help save woods and trees."

The Christmas card recycling bins are at the Royston store from now until January 31.
