The historic parish church of Litlington has been targeted by thieves who stole silverware dating back to the 16th century.

The theft took place between midnight on Thursday, May 5, and midnight on Friday, May 6, at St Catherine’s Church in Church Street.

The offenders forced the lock on the door to the vestry to steal a silver bowl and a silver porringer with a Latin inscription on the front.

Three silver plates – including two inscribed with ‘The Gift of Rev W. Webb D.D Vicar, Master of Clare Hall, for use of Parish of Litlington 1829’ – were also taken.

PC David Astley said: “I would like to hear from anyone who recalls being in the area at the time and may have seen anything suspicious to come forward.

“The items were of significant value to the church, both in monetary and sentimental terms.”

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Astley on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or use their online reporting system at crimestoppers-uk.org.
