TESCO have confirmed they will not be taking over the former Royston Woolworth's store.

Rumour had been rife that the supermarket giant was planning to set up an outlet in the vacant High Street shop.

But in a letter to campaigner Terry Hutt, Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said they would not be taking over the premises.

Sir Terry said: "The site was evaluated by our acquisitions team, and it was decided it would not be appropriate for us to proceed.

"The area is already well served with similar retailers and it was felt that Tesco would not be a viable enhancement to the area," he added.

The agents dealing with the site, Kitchen Le Frenais, said last month that they were hopeful of tying up a deal with a new tenant in the coming weeks.
