VETERAN campaigner Terry Hutt is hoping to raise awareness of pensioners' rights. The 70-year-old from Whaddon set-up a stall in Royston market after the Government announced it was requesting pensioners to return a total of £130 million in overpayments.
VETERAN campaigner Terry Hutt is hoping to raise awareness of pensioners' rights. The 70-year-old from Whaddon set-up a stall in Royston market after the Government announced it was requesting pensioners to return a total of £130 million in overpayments. Mr Hutt said: "They should never think about going back to the poor people and asking for the money back. The Government is putting the rope around their own necks." The total amount the Government is requesting pensioners return equates to 2.1 per cent of the total payments for the year. However, the Government has not issued an order for the money to be returned, but ministers have sent out a "begging letter" asking people to voluntarily hand it back. Mr Hutt said: "Asking them to pay it back is ridiculous, it's a Government mistake and it should pay for it. "The government has really caused a problem for the older community." Mr Hutt's stall also raised awareness of the need for more accessible transport for pensioners.
