Alice Gilderdale, 15, and Clare McGregor, 14, have gone bald to raise cash for Tom’s Trust, and the two Sawston Village College pupils have already collected more than £2,600.

The shaving took place at Alice’s home in Great Shelford on Monday.

She said: “We have always thought this was a good way to raise money, as well as a fun thing to do.”

The girls’ hair is being put to use too, and will be sent off to make wigs for cancer sufferers in the UK.

“A friend of ours shaved their head last year and managed to raise £1,200 so we wanted to better that in memory of Tom,” said Clare.

Tom’s Trust was set up two years ago in memory of Fowlmere resident Tom Whiteley, who died aged nine after a short brain tumour battle in 2010. So far it has raised more than £160,000 to provide clinical psychology for children with brain tumours and their families. Tom’s mother, Deb Whiteley, is one of the charity’s trustees. She said: “I am so humbled by the girls’ spirit and generosity to help children with brain tumours.”
