ASHWELL residents are so "appalled" with the litter on their streets that they have taken matters into their own hands. Liz Moynihan is heading a campaign to clean up the outskirts of the village with a monthly litter-pick. She told The Crow: "I just happened to be walking down through Ashwell and I was appalled by the amount of litter. I'm so fed up and angry with it all. "Ashwell is becoming quite an affluent village and I feel this is an affluent throw-away society, and we've got the results on the verges of the village." She said that the problem is at its worst on the approach road to Ashwell and towards the parish boundary. Litter in the centre of Ashwell is cleaned up by Mick Fox, who is employed by Ashwell Parish Council. However, no-one is responsible for removing litter dumped on the outskirts of the village. Mrs Moynihan said: "Quite a few people have said they feel exactly the same as me, so with any luck the litter-pick will become a regular feature in the village. "I'm hoping people who live near these roads outside the village might adopt a road and regularly clear it up themselves." The first litter-pick will be taking place on March 25 at 10am and residents are asked to meet outside the last house in Bygrave Road. Large bin bags will be provided, but people are asked to bring their own rubber gloves or litter pickers.
