Susan Thornton-Bjork took over the role at Royston Town Council on Monday after the retirement of Celia Walpole in December.

Mrs Walpole had been town clerk for 13 years.

Susan said: "Local government issues are something I've always been interested in.

"It's nice to be able to have some input into the area, help people enjoy it and improve the facilities.

"Royston is quite unique. It has a museum and a cave so I will be helping to promote them."

Susan lived in Bassingbourn before moving to Papworth, but she said Royston remains close to her heart because her family still live in the town.

Projects in which she has already got involved include the refurbishment of Market Hill Rooms and work on the Royston war memorial.

"There's a lot to take on board, but I'm hoping the takeover will go smoothly," she said.

Susan previously worked with Celia as assistant town clerk and then deputy town clerk.

"I'm proud to be taking over from Celia," she said.

"She will be a hard act to follow and I hope to do the town proud, as she has."

- Before her retirement, Mrs Walpole was presented with an award from the Rotary Club of Royston for her services to the community.
