THE DETERIORATING fabric of Buntingford has prompted the Civic Society to extend its street survey to cover the majority of the town. The survey which was carried out in support of the English Heritage's Save Our Streets campaign last year aims to return England's streets back to places where people want to be. However, the survey and street audit was only carried out in Baldock Road and Monks Walk last year. Society chairman Derek Cooper said: "We are encouraging partnerships in the town to work with us to look at a more broader coverage. "When we walk around the town there's a significant deficit in maintenance and refurbishment. You have only got to look at Trudgetts in the High Street - people are digging holes outside to run services into the shop which is fine, but the replenishment of the path is tarmac. Will flagstones ever be put back? "It's that sort of thing that step by step erodes the fabric of the High Street. People should restore it back. It's very frustrating." Councillor Pat Whittaker, said: "We have approached the district and the county about the fabric of the town but it always seems down to money. "The High Street hasn't been touched since 1989. The roads have never been worse than they are now." Mr Cooper will be meeting with the town council and Herts Highways in April to look at some priorities that could be addressed in dealing with the deficit of the town. - For more information or to take part in the Save Our Streets campaign e-mail saveourstreets@english-heritage.org.uk
