A SURVEY carried out by the Buntingford Civic Society revealed that 100 per cent of residents are concerned about pavements and the deteriorating fabric of the town. The survey was carried out in support of the English Heritage's Save Our Streets campaign which aims to return England's streets back to places where people want to be, without haphazard paving and obstructed footways. Thirty-five people were surveyed in Baldock Road and a street audit was carried out by the society in lower Monks Walk. The survey carried out by society member Chris Eagle revealed that people are concerned about over-hanging trees, the hazard of tripping and difficulties with pushing prams. Some 67 per cent of residents also commented on guard rails, signs and bollards. But overall paving and over-grown shrubbery were peoples' main concerns. Society chairman Derek Cooper said: "They are very powerful findings. The sample is sufficient for a pilot to prove one can collect meaningful qualitative and quantitative data on sections of the town and it wouldn't be difficult to expand on them in the future. "The concern was to keep the survey and the street audit small because if you did the whole town it would have created a large volume of things that need to be done." MP Oliver Heald said: "I very much welcome the work the Buntingford Civic Society have done. "The Save Our Streets campaign is very worthwhile as a way of improving the environment we all live in." The society proposes to publish its findings as a report. For more information or to take part in the Save Our Streets campaign e-mail saveourstreets@english-heritage.org.uk
